The Seminar “The Greek language in Australia:
Past, present and future, Challenges and Possibilities” that took place last Sunday, 26 May 2019, at the Greek Centre of the Greek Community of Melbourne, was a big success.
According to Mr Sakis Zafiropoulos, founder of the campaign “We speak Greek… and more”, maintaining our language in the Diaspora will need our constant support. Otherwise, it is in danger of giving in to the pressure of assimilation that inevitably affects all of us.
There are many reasons why this could happen such as the high percentage of mixed marriages, the significant decrease of immigrants from Greece, our long presence in Australia (the first generation decreases continuously and now makes up only 1/3 of the Greek community), the international prevalence of the English language and perhaps the fact that, as a community, we do not give the necessary important to the issue of using our maternal language.
