Victoria has recorded 1,232 new local COVID-19 cases and nine deaths as health authorities continue to investigate possible cases of the Omicron variant in Melbourne.

One case of Omicron was confirmed in hotel quarantine yesterday, while two potential community cases in Melbourne’s west and south-east are undergoing genomic testing.

There are 11,224 active cases of COVID-19 in Victoria, and 580 people have died during the state’s current outbreak.

There are 315 people in hospital with the virus, of whom 52 are in intensive care and 27 are on a ventilator.

The health department said a further 44 people were in intensive care but their COVID-19 infections were no longer considered active.

The new COVID-19 cases were detected from 71,178 test results received yesterday.

There were 3,647 doses of vaccine administered at state-run sites yesterday, and more vaccinations at GP clinics and other venues.
